Balau
General description:
The heartwood is yellow-brown, varying to brown and dark reddish-brown, with an interlocked gr ain and a moderately fine and even texture. Weight averages 930 kg/m3(58lb/ft3): specific gravity .93 very suitable for decking.
Mechanical properties:
Hard, heavy and very dense with a very high bending and crushing strength, and resistance to shock loads and high stiffness. It has a moderate steam bending classification requiring strong support on the outer face.
Durability:
Very durable and immune from insect or fungal attack. Extremely resistant to preservation treatment.
Uses:
Heavy constructional work, bridge and wharf construction, sleepers, boats etc. |

Teak Deck Flooring
General description:
The true teak is a uniform golden-brown color without markings, but most other teak is rich brown with darker chocolate-brown markings. Weight varies from 610-690 kg/m3 (38-43 lb/ft3), average 650 kg/m3(40 lb/ft3);specific gravity.65
Mechanical properties:
This hard, medium density wood has medium bending strength, high crushing strength combined with low stiffness and resistance to shock loads. It is fissile and brittle with great dimensional stability; it is fire and acid resistant. Teak can be steam bent to a moderate radius of curvature.
Durability:
Very durable, liable to insect attack. It is extremely resistant to preservation treatment.
Uses: Extensively used for ship and boat building for decking, rails, hatches etc. Furniture and cabinet making, interior and exterior joinery, flooring, exterior structural work and garden furniture. Also for acid resistant purposes such as the chemical vats, fume ducts and laboratory benches. |

Pine Deck Flooring
General Description:
The wood is creamy-white with a pink tinge at the sapwood running into a light pink-brown heartwood .It is most very straight grained, but occasionally spiral grain is present. The texture is medium and even, depending on the growth rate..The wood is non-resinous,odorless and none tainting. Weight 430 kg/m3 (27lb/ft3); specific gravity.43.
Mechanical properties:
The wood has medium bending and crushing strengths and medium stiffness and resistance to shock loads; its strength to weight ratio is high, and it has a very good bending classification.
Durability:
It is non-durable; liable to attach by pinhole borer beetle and to damage by jewel beetle. The heartwood is resistant to preservative treatment.
Uses:
The timber is sliced into veneers for laminates for aircraft and glider construction, sail planes, oars and racing sculls. It is also widely used in boat building, soundboards in piano manufacture, interior joinery, building construction, cooperage, box making, musical instruments, etc. |
